THE DECISION IN BRIEF
Our foamer makes acceptable foam during use but the first portion after standing is watery. What should change?
Record restart separately and compare the selected engine with final formula under an agreed pause sequence. Investigate formula and configuration together rather than approving only consecutive strokes.
Describe the first portion precisely
Record whether the first discharge is liquid, a mixed wet foam or a smaller-than-usual portion. Note the pause duration, bottle orientation and previous use. Preserve the exact formula and pump references so the supplier can reproduce the starting condition. Note whether the complaint follows a full previous portion or an interrupted stroke, and compare those starting states separately.
Silgan's formulation resource emphasizes matching formula and foamer configuration. Its F3 page also distinguishes liquid output from delivered foam dose. Those distinctions help frame a restart complaint without reducing it to a vague request for more foam.
Separate the observations
Compare identified samples under the same use-and-pause conditions. Do not assign a universal allowable number of watery strokes.
| Result | Next question |
|---|---|
| Only first portion is watery | What changes during the pause? |
| All portions remain wet | Is formula/configuration pairing suitable? |
| Texture varies between units | Are references and assembly consistent? |
| Behaviour changes after storage | Does approved compatibility evidence cover the condition? |
Approve the user's restart experience
Evaluate the portion that a customer actually receives first, not only the attractive foam produced after technicians have prepared the pump. Decide whether any preliminary action is acceptable for the product and test the final instructions.
Ask the supplier to compare available engine, air-to-liquid or mesh configurations where relevant. Each proposed version should be traceable and evaluated with the same bulk. Avoid an undocumented internal adjustment followed by an unlabelled replacement sample.
Have the formulation team review any suggested bulk change. Adding surfactant or diluting the product is a product-development decision, not an informal purchasing correction.
Record the accepted first portion and subsequent stable foam separately. Include the defined restart sequence in change review when formula or foamer components change. This preserves a complete user experience instead of a specification based only on a photograph of the best portion from a continuous pumping demonstration.
