LOTION & FOAM PUMPS / SPECIFICATION NOTE

Set a Foam Texture Target Suppliers Can Compare

Replace subjective requests for rich foam with observable criteria.

THE DECISION IN BRIEF

How do we specify a dense premium foam without relying on different staff opinions?

Agree a reference and observable texture criteria, then compare final formula in identified foamer configurations. Keep foam appearance, liquid consumption and user spreadability as separate records.

Choose a reference with a purpose

A reference foam can establish direction, but record how it was produced and when it was observed. Foam changes after dispensing, so compare at a defined point in the use sequence. Do not photograph one candidate immediately and another after an unrecorded delay. Ask reviewers to describe the same portion before discussing preferences, which can reveal that they are judging different attributes.

Silgan's formulation service discusses bubble size, texture and the choice of air-to-liquid ratio and mesh. This supports a structured comparison while leaving the required result specific to your product.

Describe the target

Ask formulation and marketing teams to agree what matters before suppliers optimize different versions of the word premium.

  • State the desired wetness and visual bubble appearance.
  • Identify whether shape retention matters during application.
  • Review spreadability and the intended receiving area.
  • Record liquid consumed separately from visible foam.
  • Retain a defined reference and comparison method.

Keep sensory preference tied to configuration

Use the final formula and the same dispensing procedure across candidates. Label engine and nozzle references so the preferred texture can be reproduced. A supplier should not need to infer the winning configuration from a photograph alone.

Evaluate the complete portion in ordinary use. A foam that looks dense in a cup may spread differently from what the application requires. Include relevant user observations without presenting a small internal preference exercise as broad consumer evidence.

If an alternative uses more liquid to produce the preferred appearance, account for that in expected product use and bottle life. The visual size of the foam is not sufficient to calculate consumption.

Freeze the accepted reference and describe the differences that would trigger review. When formula, mesh or engine changes, repeat the affected comparison rather than assuming the same general appearance will follow. The purchasing specification should connect a recognizable texture to a traceable assembly and practical use task.
