LOTION & FOAM PUMPS / SPECIFICATION NOTE

Keep Foam Refill Instructions from Becoming Informal Dilution

Distinguish a designed concentrate system from a finished-formula refill.

THE DECISION IN BRIEF

Can refill instructions tell customers to add water until the foamer works better?

Do not use dilution as an improvised pump remedy. Have the product team define and validate any concentrate-and-water system, then evaluate the selected pack with the approved preparation routine.

Define what is being sold

A ready-to-use refill and a concentrate requiring preparation are different product systems. Clarify the intended bulk, consumer task and formulation responsibility before purchasing packaging. A pump sample that works with a diluted laboratory blend does not approve an instruction to dilute the retail product. Check whether the receiving bottle gives users an unambiguous starting state, rather than requiring them to estimate an unknown residual amount.

Silgan's formulation guidance emphasizes suitable homogeneous formulations and configuration alignment. It supports reviewing the prepared product, not prescribing unqualified water addition to rescue unsuitable foam.

Questions for a designed preparation system

The qualified product team should own formula and preparation requirements. Purchasing translates that approved task into a package brief.

  • What exact preparation routine is intended?
  • How will users measure or recognize the required fill state?
  • What bottle, refill and pump combination is supplied?
  • What storage and use instructions apply after preparation?
  • What evidence supports the prepared bulk and repeated-use task?

Test the preparation people actually perform

Use the final refill presentation and instructions without coaching. Observe order of addition, mixing, spills and closure handling. Keep incomplete or misunderstood preparations as findings instead of correcting every sample before evaluation.

Assess the prepared product's dispensing and foam against the agreed target. Record differences resulting from the observed user routine and have the product team determine acceptable variation.

Do not add arbitrary measurement marks to a bottle without confirming that they communicate the intended preparation clearly. The bottle's visual design should support the approved task, including access and headspace where required.

If the project is simply a ready-to-use refill, state that clearly and evaluate it as supplied. A clean distinction prevents purchasing, customer service and marketing from offering contradictory advice about why the foam behaves differently. The package should execute a defined formulation system rather than ask customers to perform open-ended development at home.
