BOTTLE STOPPERS & LIDS / FIELD NOTE

Tinplate Lids Arrive With Dented Edges

Keep packing evidence and inspect edge damage before attempting application.

Tinplate lid appearance collection
Existing STDPAK catalogue reference: Existing lid collection. Appearance does not establish suitability for the application described.

THE DECISION IN BRIEF

The lid face looks fine, but some edges are bent. Can the filling line straighten them?

Do not plan to reform damaged lids during normal application. Hold suspect material and ask the lid supplier to assess the edge and sealing features against the approved reference.

Inspect beyond the decorated face

Photograph the lid edge, underside and any distorted engagement feature. Compare an affected item with an approved sample under similar lighting. Identify whether damage is concentrated near carton walls, at stack ends or across the whole pack.

Keep the original internal protection and carton condition in the evidence. Removing the lids from their packing before recording position can erase the most useful clue to handling pressure.

Avoid a misleading fit demonstration

A damaged lid that can be forced onto one jar has not become acceptable. Do not adjust application equipment to make suspect parts run without a supplier-approved disposition. Inspect the corresponding jars and stop using any damaged glass through the site’s safety process.

Separate damage present on receipt from distortion created during application. Record the exact lid, jar and equipment settings used in any authorized comparison. A different jar finish can create a second issue and confuse the investigation.

Agree packing and release decisions

Specify the protection, stack arrangement and handling information needed for replacement stock. If the route contributed to damage, let the packaging team choose a relevant evaluation; ISTA’s procedure families illustrate why the distribution route matters.

Give receiving photographs of acceptable and damaged edges, with a clear hold instruction for exceptions. Confirm the packing arrangement on replacement stock. Better face decoration does not compensate for an edge that cannot be applied and inspected under the agreed conditions.
