BOTTLE STOPPERS & LIDS / FIELD NOTE

Discolouration or Rust on a Tinplate Lid

Separate external storage effects from product-contact and coating questions.

Tinplate lid appearance collection
Existing STDPAK catalogue reference: Existing lid collection. Appearance does not establish suitability for the application described.

THE DECISION IN BRIEF

There is a mark on the underside of a lid. Does it mean the sealing compound failed?

Preserve the affected lid and jar, identify the mark’s location and ask the closure and product teams to investigate. A visual mark does not by itself establish corrosion, its source or the condition of the sealing compound.

Map the mark before cleaning

Photograph the outside, edge, underside and sealing region. Record whether the mark was present before filling, appeared in storage or developed after opening. Keep unused lids from the same lot where available.

Do not polish, scrape or wash the affected surface before the supplier’s assessment. Separate product residue from damage only through the agreed investigation. Casual cleaning may remove evidence or introduce another substance.

Review the actual contact conditions

Provide the lid coating specification available, product identity, filling process and storage history. Ask the supplier which surfaces and conditions the proposed coating is intended to cover. A generic lacquer description or material label does not establish suitability for the final filled pack.

If only outer surfaces are affected, include carton moisture and external handling conditions in the review. If marks occur only after filling, keep the product and process teams involved. Neither pattern should be treated as a final diagnosis without evidence.

Close coating and sealing separately

Any proposed coating change needs defined sample approval, including the relevant product-contact and functional review. A visually clean replacement lid does not automatically establish sealing or market compliance. Keep the responsible team’s disposition for affected product separate from the component investigation.

Keep component replacement, filled-product disposition and corrective coating approval as separate decisions in the investigation. Each has a different evidence requirement. A fresh lid that looks clean on arrival cannot close a question about the behavior of the stored filled package.

KEEP THIS WITH THE SAMPLE

For your buying brief

  • Keep marks intact for examination.
  • Record the exact surface and time of appearance.
  • Review coating suitability and sealing as separate questions.
