THE DECISION IN BRIEF
Our formula team replaced a solvent in an oil blend; can purchasing keep the same sprayer?
Keep the old approval tied to its formula revision and request a component-specific review of the replacement. Compare the changed formula before releasing it with the existing package.
Make the revision visible to packaging
A solvent replacement may be introduced for sourcing, performance or cost reasons. Packaging needs the controlled description of that change, not merely notice that the product name remains the same. Ask the formulation owner to identify relevant ingredients and any changed use or storage instructions.
Do not infer compatibility from the solvent category or a single component material. The candidate sprayer is an assembly, and the supplier needs enough information to review its defined contact components. Preserve any uncertainty when composition information remains incomplete.
Focus the comparison on the changed product
Retain the established formula as a reference when available. Fill matched, identified assemblies and compare the agreed dispensing and contact observations. Note whether the replacement changes deposit, return, restart, visible residue or component condition.
If the revised formula behaves differently, keep the affected assembly intact and request a supplier proposal linked to those observations. If an alternative contains several component changes, evaluate it as a new configuration. Do not describe one substituted material as the proven solution without evidence isolating it.
- Link the solvent change to a formula revision.
- Request a supplier review for the exact assembly.
- Compare old and revised products under an agreed plan.
- Keep commercial release separate from unresolved technical questions.
Close the purchasing decision explicitly
Tolco's 320CR information names particular contact components. Ask the supplier to review the replacement solvent against the actual candidate construction. If it proposes another configuration, request an identified sample and the specific differences that the next comparison should examine.
The final decision may retain the original dispenser, select another candidate or hold packaging release while formulation questions are resolved. Record the reason and the evidence boundary. If purchasing uses a common part number for several formulas, ensure the revised variant is added deliberately rather than silently inheriting an earlier approval.
