THE DECISION IN BRIEF
A supplier proposes recycled-content parts for our oil sprayer; what should the buying team request?
Request the exact affected components, proposed material specification and configuration reference. Review the change with technical owners and evaluate relevant package behavior before substitution.
Locate the proposed change
Recycled content is not a complete bill of materials. Ask whether the proposal concerns the cap, collar, actuator or internal parts and which surfaces can contact the product in the intended use and storage arrangements. Do not assume the answer from an exterior photograph.
Keep the current approved construction and proposed alternative side by side. If supporting information is unavailable, record that gap rather than converting a sustainability description into a compatibility statement. Commercial pressure to simplify sourcing does not identify the missing component details.
Plan a focused package comparison
Ask the supplier and formulation team which observations are needed for the defined change. Use the actual formula and complete bottle assembly. Compare fit, operation, appearance and any relevant contact behavior under an agreed plan.
If the proposal affects only an identified external part, keep that scope explicit. If contact construction changes, include the necessary formula review. Do not declare every recycled-content proposal unsafe or universally interchangeable; evaluate the documented configuration.
- Identify each changed part and reference.
- Confirm the intended contact path.
- Obtain the proposed material description.
- Preserve the baseline and alternative samples.
Decide what can be communicated and ordered
Tolco's literature describes identified chemical-resistant components. Ask for the same part-level clarity about the recycled-content proposal. Keep any content documentation separate from performance observations, but use one configuration reference so both reviews concern the same assembly.
Request accurate supplier documentation for any content claim the product team intends to make, without inventing a percentage or certification. Keep that documentation separate from package performance findings. Purchasing should order the accepted reference and require review of later substitutions. The useful decision joins the actual component proposal, its supporting information and the evaluated package instead of treating a broad material label as an engineering specification.
Avoid transferring environmental claims
Keep any recycled-content documentation attached to the exact component proposal. A statement about one external part should not become a claim about the whole assembly. The package performance review and the product team's communication review need the same configuration reference, even though they answer different questions.
