THE DECISION IN BRIEF
Our oil sprays initially but sputters after standing with visible settled material; what should we check?
Preserve the settled condition and compare identified formula samples under the intended preparation instructions. Investigate pickup and dispensing separately before changing a nozzle.
Observe the product before disturbing it
Photograph the bottle and note where visible material sits relative to the tube inlet. Record the standing history and whether the current instructions require mixing. Shaking immediately may make the symptom disappear while removing evidence of how the customer encounters the package.
Ask the formulation team to identify whether the settled material is expected. Do not assume that filtration is an acceptable correction; removing ingredients can change the product. Likewise, do not push a tool through the nozzle and then use that altered sample as proof of the original failure.
Compare the intended preparation sequence
Use fresh matching assemblies to compare the product as encountered and after the preparation described by the technical owner. Keep the action, bottle orientation and observation method consistent. Note whether the first action differs from later actions and whether the inlet remains surrounded by the same liquid phase.
If preparation restores performance, review whether users can realistically follow that instruction. If it does not, ask the supplier to examine an intact affected assembly and the formula history. A different tube or nozzle is a sample proposal to evaluate, not an automatic remedy.
- Preserve one undisturbed bottle for examination.
- Record formula batch and visible settling.
- Identify tube position without changing its shape.
- Log preparation and actuation as separate steps.
Decide whether packaging or formula work comes first
A formula team may need to address settling before a dispenser comparison is meaningful. Alternatively, a defined dispenser candidate may need evaluation with a product that intentionally contains dispersed material. Make that responsibility explicit so purchasing does not request a generic clog-resistant pump.
Silgan includes bi-phase formulas among demanding applications for defined engines. Describe the settled product and intended preparation when requesting a candidate. Ask what evidence about the material and its behavior is needed before comparing another tube or nozzle.
Review intake observations cautiously
An inlet surrounded by visible material can guide examination, but it does not prove that the same material entered the mechanism. If the supplier requests dismantling, identify which sample may be altered and retain another intact reference. This keeps the original standing condition available for a second technical review.
