THE DECISION IN BRIEF
A second supplier matches our pump's finish, colour and nominal output. Can it become an automatic alternate?
Qualify its identified assembly with the intended bottle, formula and process. Use the existing specification as the requirement, while recognizing that matching catalogue attributes do not establish equivalent materials or behaviour.
Define the reason for the alternate
State whether the goal is continuity, cost or added capacity. Decide which characteristics must remain common and which differences the product can accept. A controlled alternate can be useful without pretending it is physically identical to the incumbent. Ask whether each source can maintain the chosen supply format, because different incoming preparation can change the filler’s task.
O.Berk's component breakdown shows multiple interfaces behind a familiar exterior. Aptar's configurable pump family likewise illustrates that finish and dosage are only part of a complete reference.
Compare requirements rather than marketing names
Request the alternate supplier's own documentation and samples. Do not ask it to certify another company's unverified construction.
| Requirement | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Bottle fit and seal | Matched drawings and assembled trials |
| Formula suitability | Relevant selected-material evaluation |
| Use experience | Prime, portion, recovery and cleanliness |
| Manufacturing | Line handling and closure application |
| Identity | Separate controlled alternate reference |
Plan the transition before approval
Run comparative work using representative current and alternate assemblies with the same bulk and bottle. Record differences openly. A slightly different opening action may be acceptable, but instructions and customer experience need review.
Check whether production stock can be distinguished when both sources are available. If users receive either version under one product identity, the product team should accept both experiences. The filler needs an executable selection and traceability plan.
Include decoration, supply format and protective accessories in the commercial comparison. An attractive pump price may exclude operations already included by the incumbent.
Release an alternate with its own identity
Record the permitted combinations and any restrictions, such as a particular bottle or formula. Do not relabel the alternate as the incumbent reference merely to simplify ordering.
Maintain change review for both sources. If one supplier revises an engine, its approval does not transfer automatically to the other. The purchasing benefit comes from two qualified routes with clear evidence, not from treating similar-looking parts as an uncontrolled common stock item.
