LOTION & FOAM PUMPS / SPECIFICATION NOTE

What Viscosity Information Should Accompany a Pump Enquiry?

Give suppliers measurement context and representative bulk.

THE DECISION IN BRIEF

Suppliers disagree about which pump suits our viscosity number. What information is missing?

Send the measurement method, temperature, formula identity and a representative sample. Use the viscosity report to screen candidates, then approve the selected assembly with the actual formula.

Explain how the number was obtained

“Medium lotion, 8,000 viscosity” leaves the units and measurement context unresolved. Ask the formulator for the instrument or procedure, temperature and relevant settings used to obtain the result. Give every candidate supplier the same report so their recommendations begin with comparable information.

Aptar's PAV Treatment resource describes dosage and viscosity options within a product family. It supports asking about a selected configuration; it does not turn one unexplained bulk measurement into approval for any similar-looking pump.

Prepare the technical handover

Share confidential composition through an appropriate agreed channel. The purchasing brief should still contain enough non-confidential detail to identify the sample and explain the dispensing task.

  • Identify formula reference, batch and intended manufacturing state.
  • State units, method, temperature and relevant measurement settings.
  • Describe visible particles, stringing, separation and changes after standing.
  • Send representative bulk with its handling instructions.
  • Explain the usable portion, pressing rhythm and intended storage conditions.

Resolve recommendations through a controlled comparison

Ask each supplier which uncertainty its recommendation addresses: pickup, recovery, actuation effort, compatibility or clean separation. Several configurations may be reasonable candidates for the same broad formula description. Comparing actual samples is more useful than selecting the most confident sales answer.

Keep bottle, fill amount and actuation method consistent where practical. Record initial prime, stable delivery, return and nozzle residue separately. A sample that eventually produces the desired portion can still feel frustrating during ordinary use.

When the bulk changes during development, issue revised information and identify which tests used the earlier version. An obsolete viscosity report may produce a technically consistent recommendation for the wrong formula. Reconcile packaging and formula revisions before releasing the order.

Retain the measurement report beside the approved sample record. This lets a later problem be investigated against actual formulation history instead of an informal description that changes between departments.
