THE DECISION IN BRIEF
A cheaper foamer gives larger portions. How should we compare its cost with a premium engine?
Compare component cost and measured liquid use per intended application, alongside acceptable texture and usability. A lower pump price may not produce the lower-cost finished-product experience.
Use the customer's application as the unit
Define the amount of use the product should support and how many strokes customers normally need. Do not calculate pack life from visible foam volume alone. Silgan's F3 page distinguishes liquid output from delivered foam dose, making the liquid-consumption record the appropriate starting point.
Measure representative assemblies with the actual formula and agreed procedure. Treat calculated pack life as an estimate with stated assumptions, not a performance guarantee.
Build the comparison sheet
Use your measured values; the following are cost inputs rather than universal technical limits.
- Delivered component cost for the selected complete assembly.
- Liquid consumed per stable stroke and per ordinary application.
- Required stroke count to obtain the intended result.
- Expected residual product under the agreed end-of-use method.
- Filling, packing and accessory differences between candidates.
Include the texture tradeoff
A larger liquid portion may support the desired use in fewer strokes. It may also deliver more product than needed. Compare actual application before assuming either benefit or waste. A smaller portion that forces repeated pressing can feel less convenient despite lower measured consumption.
If the preferred texture requires a different engine, retain the sensory and functional observations supporting that preference. Marketing value is a legitimate commercial input when it is described clearly rather than hidden inside a vague premium claim.
Ask suppliers to quote matched complete configurations. Caps, tubes, decoration and supply format can make apparently comparable engine prices misleading.
Make assumptions visible
Show the product team how the conclusion changes if users press twice instead of once or if residual product differs. This sensitivity review is more useful than reporting a single precise lifetime derived from uncertain habits.
Select the configuration that supports the intended application and commercial proposition. Keep the calculation inputs linked to the measured samples so a later output or formula change prompts an update rather than leaving an obsolete cost estimate in circulation.
