THE DECISION IN BRIEF
Our foam becomes wet and difficult to dispense after cold storage. Should we switch engines?
Compare conditioned and reference samples with the same final bulk. Ask the formulator and supplier to review the affected behaviour before selecting another engine or changing formula.
Preserve the actual exposure
Record the storage conditions, duration and recovery period before use. Distinguish operation while cold from operation after returning to the intended environment. A complaint described only as cold-weather foam does not tell the supplier which condition to reproduce. Photograph the bulk where visible before dispensing, and record whether any observed change persists after the agreed recovery sequence.
Silgan emphasizes that formulation and pump configuration jointly support foam quality. This provides a sound basis for comparing the pairing under the conditions that matter to the product, rather than assigning a universal foamer temperature range.
A focused comparison
Agree relevant conditions and criteria with the qualified teams. The sequence is a development aid, not a prescribed standard.
- Use matched filled packs with identified formula and component references.
- Keep one set under the reference condition.
- Condition another set according to the reported situation.
- Record pressing effort, return, liquid delivery and foam appearance.
- Compare immediate use and any approved recovery period separately.
Do not confuse a visual change with the whole failure
Wet-looking foam may still involve an appropriate liquid portion, while a smaller portion can alter appearance for another reason. Measure or otherwise assess the relevant outputs instead of diagnosing solely from the plume at the nozzle.
If the bulk changes visibly, preserve samples and involve the formulator. Do not solve a possible formulation issue by repeatedly trying larger engines without a technical rationale.
Where a new configuration is proposed, compare normal-condition performance as well. Improving one storage scenario should not silently compromise ordinary-use texture, consumption or accessibility.
Describe the required customer experience explicitly. If instructions require a recovery step, assess whether users understand and can follow it. If immediate use after delivery is required, make that part of the supplier brief. The commercial choice should follow a defined use requirement and comparative evidence.
