THE DECISION IN BRIEF
Our perfume output readings vary widely. Could the collection method be responsible?
Review collection loss, evaporation, stroke consistency, and balance suitability before changing the pump specification. Report mass and any volume conversion separately.
Define what is being measured
State whether the result is mass collected, calculated volume, or another characteristic. If converting mass to volume, use an appropriate density basis for the actual formula and conditions. Do not relabel a measured mass value as milliliters.
A perfume spray can miss a collector or change during a delayed weighing sequence. Ask the responsible laboratory or supplier to define a suitable collection method. A wide open target that looks convenient may not retain the full delivered sample.
Control the main method variables
Use the same collection arrangement and timing for candidate and reference runs. Keep the actual fragrance formula identified, record the measured mass first, and document any density conversion separately from the weighing result.
- Confirm balance suitability and the weighing configuration.
- Control full stroke, release, and collection sequence.
- Minimize and document collection and timing losses.
- Record startup separately from the defined stable measurements.
Check the method before judging variation
Use matched assemblies and repeat the same procedure. Compare operators where disagreement suggests handling differences. If the collector or timing changes the result materially, resolve that method issue before attributing every spread to the pump.
Avoid reporting a highly precise average that hides an unsuitable collection process. Record the number of strokes, timing, formula, temperature, sample identity, and relevant measurement limitations. Select sample quantities and acceptance criteria with the responsible team; they are not universal values supplied by this guide.
Use the result for the right buying decision
Once the method is stable, compare the exact candidate configurations against the project’s intended delivery requirement. Keep spray distribution as a separate characteristic. Similar collected mass does not guarantee the same target application or user sensation.
Save the method and identified reference with the approved output specification. If a supplier quotes a nominal catalogue value, ask how it was determined and whether it applies to the exact proposed SKU. Purchasing can then compare like measurements and avoid rejecting a suitable pump because two parties used incompatible collection methods.
