THE DECISION IN BRIEF
Should we specify a ribbed collar because customers use the bottle with wet hands?
Compare the actual finishes and opening action on filled packs. Ribbing can be a candidate, but approve grip, comfort, cleaning and decoration through relevant handling trials.
Identify which surface needs grip
The collar may be gripped during first opening or bottle removal, while the actuator supports the dispensing finger. These are different tasks. Ask reviewers where they naturally hold the pack before specifying texture everywhere.
O.Berk notes both smooth and ribbed closure options. That choice concerns the selected closure surface; it does not establish a universal preference for every formula, user or bottle shape.
Compare the tasks independently
Use final or representative finishes. A plain moulded prototype may not reproduce the feel of a coated or metallized production part.
| Task | Observe |
|---|---|
| Unlocking | Grip location and unintended bottle-closure movement |
| Dispensing | Finger slips and complete stroke |
| Moving the bottle | Secure support without accidental pressing |
| Cleaning the exterior | Residue in surface details and acceptable appearance |
Review the wet-use tradeoffs
Ask whether wet hands, formula-covered hands or both are relevant. Use an agreed comparison that reflects the product's application without creating an exaggerated demonstration. Record mistakes and corrective actions rather than asking only which sample feels premium.
A texture that improves grip may change how residue collects or how the surface looks after use. Check repeated handling and the team's intended cleaning instructions. Do not claim that a ribbed surface is inherently more hygienic or that a smooth finish is always easier to clean.
Consider how the closure interacts with label alignment and bottle geometry. Users may reach for the bottle shoulder if the gripping area is too narrow or visually unclear. Compare the whole pack instead of evaluating loose collars at a desk.
Specify texture, material and decoration together in the selected reference. If the supplier changes a coating or surface treatment, assess whether the accepted grip remains. The buying choice should emerge from the actual use task, with appearance considered alongside the user's ability to operate the pack confidently.
