THE DECISION IN BRIEF
Our lotion stretches into a strand after each press. Should we order a smaller dose?
Compare actuator and cutoff options with the intended formula before reducing dose. Assess separation during ordinary hand movement alongside the usable portion and actuator recovery.
Capture the separation sequence
Record whether the strand develops during pressing, while the hand moves away or after the head has returned. Identify the sample in the photographs. A single picture of a dirty nozzle after many uses gives the supplier little evidence about how the problem starts.
A smaller portion may reduce visible residue without correcting separation. Keep the target application in the brief so the eventual improvement does not force customers to press an inconvenient number of times.
Evaluate the candidate remedy
Silgan's catalogue describes suck-back on a particular Lyric configuration. Such a feature is an example to discuss with the supplier, not a capability to assume on every lotion pump.
| Change | Required comparison |
|---|---|
| Another actuator or nozzle | Cutoff, hand clearance and residue |
| Different engine | Portion, recovery and separation together |
| Lower output | User portion and required stroke count |
| Formula revision | Formulator approval and package reevaluation |
Look beyond the first clean stroke
Use a complete stroke for the controlled comparison, then observe ordinary application with the final bulk. Allow full return and record whether users need to wipe the outlet. Include restart after standing because residue may change the next portion.
Fit the overcap if the pack uses one. A hanging strand can transfer formula inside the cap, creating a different cleanliness or decoration issue. Inspect touch points and surrounding surfaces after repeated use rather than approving a pristine dry display pack.
Select the configuration that balances clean separation, useful portion and comfortable operation. Retain the exact outlet reference; a similar external shape can conceal a different discharge design. Require review of substitutions that affect the flow path.
Document whether wiping is part of the intended routine. If so, assess that instruction with users rather than silently adding it to rescue an otherwise inconvenient package. The buying decision should reflect the actual experience the brand is prepared to deliver.
