LOTION & FOAM PUMPS / SPECIFICATION NOTE

Address Residual Lotion Before Approving Refill Instructions

Keep formula carryover and pack handling in the development brief.

THE DECISION IN BRIEF

Should refill instructions tell customers to top up lotion before the bottle is empty?

Have the qualified product team define the permitted refill routine and residual-product handling. Evaluate the selected package with that routine; do not invent mixing or cleaning instructions from pump performance alone.

Identify the intended refill behaviour

Clarify whether the proposition allows topping up, refilling after normal dispensing stops or replacing the complete bottle. These are product-system decisions. Purchasing should obtain an approved scenario before asking the component supplier to demonstrate reuse.

O.Berk explains that tube reach affects product use. That information can help assess remaining product, but it does not establish whether old and new formula may be mixed or what cleaning routine is appropriate.

Questions for the product team

Keep formulation and quality decisions with the responsible specialists. The packaging enquiry should document their approved task.

  • When is refilling intended to occur?
  • How is remaining formula treated in the user instructions?
  • Are different variants allowed to use the same reusable pack?
  • What opening, handling or cleaning actions are permitted?
  • What evidence is needed to support the proposed routine?

Evaluate hardware against the approved routine

Use the actual refill format and final bottle. Observe whether users can pour or transfer product without interfering with the dip tube, sealing land or other components. Inspect the closure before and after reassembly.

Measure remaining product using an agreed end-of-use method. Specify whether tilting, tapping or unscrewing counts as normal use, because those actions change the observation. Do not advertise an emptying claim based on an undisclosed laboratory intervention.

If the routine requires a dry or otherwise prepared bottle, ask the product team how that state will be achieved and understood by users. A pump that functions mechanically after reassembly is not evidence that the full refill procedure is appropriate.

Retain the accepted instructions and formula references with the reusable packaging specification. A new scent or changed refill presentation may require review of carryover assumptions. This keeps the commercial refill promise aligned with an approved user process instead of allowing packaging convenience to determine formulation policy.
