LOTION & FOAM PUMPS / SPECIFICATION NOTE

Build Useful Lot Traceability for Lotion Pumps

Connect delivered cartons, component references and filled-pack records.

THE DECISION IN BRIEF

How much identification should we request when lotion pumps arrive in bulk cartons?

Agree identification that links incoming material to the selected reference and supplier lot, then preserve that link through filling. Collect useful traceability rather than markings that nobody records.

Define the investigation you need to support

If a dispensing complaint appears after shipment, the team should be able to identify the pump configuration and relevant production material. Ask what information the supplier can supply consistently on cartons and delivery documents, and how internal parts or variants are controlled. If supplier cartons are split between runs, record the split so later complaints can be mapped to both finished batches.

Keep the engine, actuator, closure and tube references together in the lot record. Two externally similar assemblies can contain different components, so a colour description alone cannot identify the supplied construction.

Preserve the chain

Choose a practical scheme with the supplier and filler. This is a purchasing workflow, not a requirement for a particular code format.

Prevent loss of identity during handling

Discuss how cartons are opened, parts are fed and partial cartons are returned to stock. If several similar variants run on the same day, agree separation and identification before relying on an operator's memory.

Keep photographs of the carton label and retain representative samples where the quality plan requires them. Ensure the record indicates whether a sample was incoming, filled or subjected to a specific evaluation. Those states answer different questions.

When reporting a failure, include actual observations and the identity chain, not only the supplier's name. This helps the supplier compare relevant production history without exposing unrelated commercial information.

Review traceability after supplier or packing-format changes. A new label design may look clearer yet omit the field the filler uses. Purchasing should confirm that the agreed identification survives the complete process and remains readable in the retained records long enough to support the team's investigation needs.
