THE DECISION IN BRIEF
Our lotion base stays the same but fragrance changes. Can we reuse pump approval?
Review the revision with formulation and packaging teams. Reuse approval only where evidence covers the new bulk; evaluate affected materials and dispensing with the selected assembly.
A familiar base does not identify the final bulk
Purchasing may receive the new formula as a simple seasonal scent change. Record the actual formula reference and the change information the formulator can share. The relevant question is whether existing evidence applies to this completed formulation, not whether marketing regards it as the same product.
Silgan's LX resource describes compatibility across particular application areas while still presenting a defined pump design. Manufacturer application descriptions are screening information; they do not approve every fragrance variant in a buyer's range.
Decide what needs another look
Ask the qualified teams to determine the scope. The table is a review prompt rather than a prediction that any specific fragrance will cause failure.
| Changed observation or requirement | Review |
|---|---|
| Bulk flow or stringing differs | Recovery, portion and cutoff |
| New formula-contact ingredients | Selected wetted materials |
| Different nozzle residue | Restart and cleanliness |
| Different exposure on decorated parts | Exterior contact evaluation |
Keep the comparison efficient
Use the existing approved assembly as the reference and label new filled samples clearly. Compare the relevant operation and storage observations under the same conditions. This avoids a broad, unfocused retest while still addressing what changed.
Ask the formulator whether the new sample represents the final production process and composition. Testing an early scent proposal provides development information but cannot close approval for a later blend. Keep each sample tied to a formula revision and fill date in the internal record.
If the supplier proposes changing the seal or engine for one scent, record that variant separately. Consider the operational cost of managing several visually identical pumps and whether a common qualified configuration is available.
Release the reorder only after the review decision is documented. A short written assessment that explains retained evidence and any new results is more valuable than silently carrying the old approval number forward. It also gives future buyers a traceable basis for deciding whether another scent belongs within the same established range.
