THE DECISION IN BRIEF
Two laboratories report different viscosity values for our oil; which number should the sprayer supplier use?
Send both results with their methods, sample identities and conditions. Ask the formulation team to reconcile them before treating either number as the packaging requirement.
Keep the measurement attached to its context
A viscosity value copied into a quotation sheet loses much of its meaning when its method and sample condition disappear. Collect the original reports and confirm that they describe the same formula revision. Include measurement conditions, instrument information and any preparation notes available from the laboratories.
Do not average unlike results simply to produce one convenient purchasing number. The difference may reflect method, condition or sample history. Ask the technical owner to explain which information best represents the finished product and its intended use, and keep unanswered questions visible.
Give the supplier behavior as well as data
Send identified formula samples where appropriate and describe the observed dispensing problem. A pump that returns slowly raises a different question from one that returns normally but deposits a concentrated patch. Record whether either behavior changes after standing or under the expected use environment.
Aptar distinguishes oil-based and more viscous formula variants. Send the clarified measurement context with the actual dispensing observations so the supplier can connect data to a proposed sample. Ask which unresolved property would change that recommendation.
- Confirm formula revision and batch on each report.
- Preserve units, method and measurement conditions.
- Identify any dilution, mixing or preparation difference.
- Ask which result represents the intended filled product.
Select samples against the intended application
Once the formulation team explains the difference, request candidates using the clarified data and the actual use brief. Keep the nozzle, bottle and tube identified. Compare the desired deposit, actuation and restart behavior rather than ranking pumps only against a viscosity number.
If production variability remains unresolved, include representative identified batches in a proposed comparison. A sample chosen around one convenient laboratory result may conceal a real range in the product. Document what the candidate was evaluated with and which future formula changes require another discussion.
Ask purchasing to retain the clarified report reference instead of copying a rounded value into every supplier form. If a supplier requests another method, route that request to the formulation owner. The packaging discussion should not silently redefine a laboratory property simply to fit a standard sales questionnaire.
