THE DECISION IN BRIEF
The supplier proposes an equivalent nozzle insert. What must purchasing approve?
Request its exact identity and differences, then compare the affected spray, restart, residue, and formula-contact behavior before allowing substitution.
Identify what equivalent means
Ask the supplier whether the proposal changes geometry, material, manufacturing source, or only an internal reference number. Record the reason for the change and the evidence supporting equivalence. A photograph of two identical actuator exteriors cannot establish that the internal spray-forming parts are unchanged.
Aptar explicitly offers insert selection according to formula type. That makes insert identity relevant to the approved application. Keep the engine, head, and formula controlled when comparing the new insert so the trial can answer the substitution question.
Match evidence to the proposed difference
The review should be proportionate to the actual change, with the product and supplier technical teams agreeing what existing evidence remains applicable.
| Change | Targeted review |
|---|---|
| Geometry | Application distribution and direction |
| Material | Relevant formula contact and storage |
| Source or process | Conformity and consistency evidence |
| Assembly interface | Seating, retention, and repeatable operation |
Compare more than the fresh spray
Use the final formula and intended user sequence. Record early operation, repeated strokes, idle restart, nozzle wetting, and any product-specific residue concern. If the original approval identified a sensitive failure mode, make that comparison explicit rather than relying on a generic supplier summary.
Preserve original and revised samples with their identities. If results differ, ask the supplier to explain which changed characteristic is responsible. Do not accept a sequence of unlabelled replacement heads that makes it impossible to know which configuration finally passed.
If the revision meets the brief, update the controlled bill of materials, reference samples, and receiving information. Agree the first production-lot confirmation and inventory transition so old and new parts remain distinguishable where necessary.
If evidence is incomplete, keep the proposal open rather than silently accepting it through a routine reorder. Purchasing should have a clear approval record showing the accepted insert, related construction, supporting comparison, and any remaining conditions. This lets future quotations preserve the selected dispensing behavior even when the visible actuator name stays the same.
