THE DECISION IN BRIEF
The fragrance house changed the concentrate, but the base is unchanged. Do we need pump trials?
Review the exact formula change with the technical teams and run targeted comparisons where contact, residue, appearance, or dispensing may be affected.
Do not equate the same base with the same liquid
Record both concentrate identity and finished formula revision. A similar scent description is not a technical equivalence statement. Ask the formulator to identify changes relevant to packaging review through an appropriate confidential channel rather than requesting proprietary information in an open purchasing email.
Keep the current approved fragrance as a comparator. It provides a useful baseline for package behavior, although it cannot prove that the revised formula is acceptable. Select representative pump lots so the comparison does not accidentally become a test of unrelated component variation.
Build a targeted comparison
Silgan's Sinfonia Elegance Spray page identifies an SR engine option for demanding formulations. That supports reviewing construction when the liquid changes; it does not assign compatibility to your proposed SKU.
- Compare stored appearance at the nozzle and inside the cap.
- Observe startup after the agreed idle interval.
- Review exposed seals and decorative surfaces.
- Evaluate the intended spray sequence with both formulas.
Choose the investigation from the symptom
A color change on the actuator may require decoration or contact review even if dispensing remains stable. A changed first spray may point toward residue or a different formula response. Leakage after conditioning needs its own investigation and should not be dismissed as a cosmetic consequence of a new scent.
If the new formula behaves similarly across candidates, involve the formulator before changing every pump. If the problem follows one material construction, request a specific alternative and repeat the relevant contact work. Preserve all revised samples with complete identities; concentrate development can generate several very similar versions.
Approve the revision and transition
Have the responsible product team define the scope of required reassessment. Targeted testing can be appropriate when justified, but document why previous evidence remains applicable to unchanged aspects. Do not turn a limited trial into a blanket statement about all fragrances in the range.
Update the formula reference on the component approval packet and define inventory allocation. If multiple scents will use one sprayer, list the actual approved formulas rather than writing suitable for perfume. Require a fresh review when later scent additions fall outside that documented set.
