THE DECISION IN BRIEF
The gold collar sample looks right. What else should we approve?
Identify the actual collar construction and finish, then evaluate assembly, handling and formula exposure alongside colour and appearance.
Describe construction separately from finish
A gold or silver appearance does not identify a collar’s underlying material or decoration process. Ask the supplier to state what is being supplied, including any outer shell, inner closure and applied finish. Keep those details separate from the colour reference so a visual match does not conceal a construction change.
Use a physical appearance standard or agreed reference under defined viewing conditions. Screen images help discuss direction, but they are poor final standards for subtle differences in gloss or shade. State which surfaces matter and how visible variation will be judged with the supplier before the order is placed.
Check the finished assembly
Fit the decorated collar to the intended bottle and dropper construction. Observe seating, opening, bulb access, pipette withdrawal and contact between neighbouring parts. Decoration approval should not rely on an empty outer shell if the production part contains an inner closure that determines the actual fit.
Include the proposed assembly and filling process in the review. Identify contact points where tools, handling or line guides may mark the finish. If damage appears, photograph its location and sequence before changing the surface specification. A finish adjustment will not necessarily correct mechanical interference or an unsuitable handling method.
Use the intended liquid and handling
Arrange evaluation of ordinary formula contact, wiping, repeated opening and relevant storage conditions. Agree the method and acceptance criteria with the responsible teams. Do not assume resistance to water, a cleaning agent or a different serum establishes the appearance performance needed with your own formula.
Assess colour transfer, visible marking, changes in gloss and condition around edges or joints as appropriate to the construction. Record function separately from cosmetics. A collar can remain attractive yet lose an acceptable opening feel, or operate normally while developing an appearance problem that matters to the brand.
Keep the approved finish traceable
Attach the approved appearance reference, component identity, finish description and agreed checks to the order. Distinguish permitted variation from defects and identify how inspection samples will be compared. A note saying premium gold gives receiving staff little help when a shipment differs from the sample the marketing team approved.
Ask the supplier to communicate changes to the decoration process, source, material or construction before substitution. Recheck affected requirements on revised samples and retain the previous standard for comparison. Include quantity by colour and packing protection in the quotation request so commercial assumptions do not undermine an otherwise sound finish approval.
